Gameplay

Arkham City combines elements of stealth and predator tactics within an open world environment. All of the weapons featured in its predecessor Arkham Asylum, will be present from the beginning of Arkham City. Most of the weapons include improved capabilities, for example the Cryptographic sequencer now possesses the ability to track signals. An additional gadget has been included which are smoke bombs to confuse enemies.

The game will include more puzzle elements and the use of Batman's ''Detective Mode'' will once again prove to be an important tool. The Detective Mode allows the player to pinpoint enemy skeletons and on-screen clues and forensic activities. Similar to the first game, the player has access to a criminal database. This database allows the user to track major villains and forensic puzzles.

Optional challenges from the Riddler will be included in the game, but will require additional effort to locate. Players will need to interrogate men loyal to the Riddler and use Batman's gadgets to disable traps and destroy barriers placed around them. After locating some trophies, the player will be required to rescue a hostage  the Riddler has captured, whilst disabling the death traps the Riddler has set for you.

The player will control Batman and make their way around Arkham City to complete missions. In addition to the primary mission, the game includes secondary missions which feature a number of characters and their stories. The player possesses the ability to move silently, which will avoid inmates and other enemies whilst using a combination of gadgets to sneak up on enemies and take them out. At other times, Batman could be forced to fight through inmates utilising the improved combat system from Arkham Asylum. The improved combat system now allows players to react to thrown objects, multiple simultaneous counters, and the ability to use Batman's gadgets during combat. Movement around the city proves to be an arduous task, owing to the formation of gangs and territory between rival villains, such as Two-Face and the Joker.

Catwoman will be a playable character in the game with her own story at specific points in the game. Her combat style will be acrobatic-oriented and will include her claws, whips and boas. She will possess her own ''Detective Mode'' called ''Thief Vision'' that  locates items for her to steal.

Plot

The events of Arkham City will take place one year after those of Arkham Asylum. Former warden of Arkham Asylum, Quincy Sharp, has taken credit for stopping the Joker and used the notoriety to become the Mayor of Gotham City. Arkham or Blackgate Prison are unable to detain the inmates, therefore Sharp buys a large section of Gotham's slums, then arms the perimeter with private military contractors in order to create ''Arkham City''.

The prisoners are given free rein within Arkham City, providing they do not attempt to escape. Sharp hired psychiatrist Hugo Strange to oversee the city, yet it seems he has his own secret agenda for the city. The events of the game begin with Two-Face, who devises a plan to publicly execute Catwoman to gain notoriety among the inmates and villains outside the city. With the safety of Gotham and his past relationship with Catwoman in mind, Batman decides he must stop the execution by entering Arkham City.
